Dear colleagues,

it is our pleasure to announce the Summer School 2018: Citizen Science in Theory and Practice which will take place from 15 to 19 October 2018 at the JUFA Hotel Almtal in Grünau im Almtal, Austria. The summer school is organised by PhD fellows of the Vienna Doctoral School CoBeNe (University of Vienna, Austria; https://vds-cobene.univie.ac.at/), which financially supports this event, and will be held in cooperation with the Konrad Lorenz Research Station (http://klf.univie.ac.at/) and the Cumberland game park Grünau (http://www.wildparkgruenau.at/), where several Citizen Science (CS) projects are taking place. This event targets especially students with a Master’s degree, PhD candidates and Post-Docs, but we also welcome other people interested in conducting a CS research project.

CS is becoming increasingly important within the research community, as one can gain large, spatially and temporally scaled data sets. But how to get citizen scientists interested and how to deal with big data? What makes a successful study and where to publish your data? We will cover all relevant topics associated with CS: from the value of CS, planning a study, funding, designing apps and motivating citizens (i.e. communication and recruitment) to analysing big scattered data sets (using R Statistical Software; participants may also bring their own data so that they may obtain help in the data analysis by the course instructor; basic knowledge of R is mandatory), presenting and publishing results.

Apart from keynote talks held by international experts, participants will get hands-on experiences associated with the respective topics and time to network with the invited speakers and other participants. We are proud to announce the following confirmed lecturers (listed alphabetically): Peter Brown (Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge), Daniel Dörler (University of Natural Resources and Life Science, Vienna), Didone Frigerio (University of Vienna, Vienna), Florian Heigl (University of Natural Resources and Life Science, Vienna), Philipp Hummer (SPOTTERON Citizen Science, Vienna), Coleman Krawczyk (University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth), Anett Richter (German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research, Leipzig), Andrea Sieber (Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt, Klagenfurt).

Participants will have the opportunity to:

– work on their own projects

– meet international experts in the area of citizen science

– engage in social events, such as a social dinner and hiking tour,

– enjoy the pleasant setting of the country side of Grünau im Almtal

The summer school is limited to 30 participants. For more information, please see the attachment (save the date flyer) or visit: https://vds-cobene.univie.ac.at/ and http://klf.univie.ac.at/summer-school/. Applications are open until 15 July 2018.
