EUROPEAN ORNITHOLOGISTS’ UNION

Call for Symposia proposals, round tables, and pre-congress meetings

14th EOU Conference

Lund, Sweden

21-25 August 2023

Deadline for submitting symposium proposals: 9 September 2022

We invite you to submit symposium proposals for the 14th Conference of the European Ornithologists’ Union, to be held in Lund, Sweden, 21-25 August 2023. The EOU conference offers a unique opportunity for presenting your research to a diverse audience of ornithologists, and to highlight a topic about which you are passionate.

A symposium should focus on a clear and broad theme that can be expected to be of interest beyond a highly specialist group. We envisage that a symposium will consist of a 5 min introduction presented by the conveners, a 25 min review of the theme and 4 talks of 15 min each (this includes questions and moving between symposia). The symposium is closed by a 5 min summary by the conveners. We envisage that the review and 2 or 3 talks are organised by the conveners, and that 1 or 2 talks can be selected from contributed talks proposed by conference participants. All talks invited by conveners must be confirmed by the time of submission of the application.

Evaluation of symposium proposals will be based mainly on originality, interest, and relevance to ornithology in terms of key current issues. Furthermore, we encourage diversity in the applications: There should be two conveners from different countries, and a balanced mix of speakers in terms of gender and age is considered an advantage. Involvement of Early Career Researchers (ECRs – PhD students or post-docs within 5 years of obtaining their PhD), either as co-conveners or invited speakers (identify clearly any ECRs in the application), is desirable. Please ensure that the talks are given by people from different groups and preferably from different countries. No single person should present more than a single talk during the same EOU conference.

Symposium Proposal: Your proposal should include the title, convener names and affiliations, and the presenters and (preliminary) titles of the review and talks. You should include a paragraph that would serve as a scientific summary that can go on the website to attract submissions (if the proposal is accepted), and a separate motivation paragraph for the SPC’s evaluation. The proposal should ideally be no longer than one A4 page. The deadline for submitting symposium proposals is 9 September 2022.

Round Tables can be organized during evening sessions (2 h maximum). Their aim is to generate discussion and stimulate networking on a specific research topic or question. Round Tables can incorporate brief presentations to introduce the topic of discussion, but should leave sufficient room for actual discussion and interaction. Proposals should include the title, a brief description of the topic, and name and affiliation of the convener(s). The deadline for submitting round tables is 1 February 2023. Submissions after this date can still be considered if there is enough space in the program.

Pre-congress meetings can consist of a half-day or a full-day meeting, with the format decided by the conveners. Submissions should contain the same information as the Round Tables. The deadline for submitting pre-congress meeting proposals is 1 February 2023.

Submission: Submit your symposium proposal as an email attachment to Suvi Ruuskanen, Scientific Programme Committee Chairperson, at: [email protected]
