From 4-6th of November 2016, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences staged the first Fledgelings meeting in Vienna, Austria. Together and with financial aid by the German Ornithological Society ( and the North Rhine Westphalian Ornithological Society (, this early career ornithologists meeting at a European scale attracted more than 40 people from institutions spreading across 12 different countries. The conference offered a platform to present and discuss the latest ornithological research from bachelor to PhD level, and offered lots of opportunities to connect with each other in a relaxed environment. The presentations given by the flock of Fledgelings were further enriched by plenary lectures from already fledged colleagues. To round the conference up, a Poster, Beer, and Pizza session and an evening event at a local brewery gave plenty of room for academic and non-academic conversations. Given the strong positive feedback by the participants, the EOU Fledgelings hope to repeat this format in the near future.
