From 4-6th of November 2016, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences staged the first Fledgelings meeting in Vienna, Austria. Together and with financial aid by the German Ornithological Society (www.do-g.de) and the North Rhine Westphalian Ornithological Society (http://www.nw-ornithologen.de/), this early career ornithologists meeting at a European scale attracted more than 40 people from institutions spreading across 12 different countries. The conference offered a platform to present and discuss the latest ornithological research from bachelor to PhD level, and offered lots of opportunities to connect with each other in a relaxed environment. The presentations given by the flock of Fledgelings were further enriched by plenary lectures from already fledged colleagues. To round the conference up, a Poster, Beer, and Pizza session and an evening event at a local brewery gave plenty of room for academic and non-academic conversations. Given the strong positive feedback by the participants, the EOU Fledgelings hope to repeat this format in the near future.
